Air Force Female GAD Advocates Gather for 2018 GEWE Seminar/Workshop

07 March 2018

The Philippine Air Force Gender and Development Focal Point System, through the GAD Secretariat, recently conducted the three-day Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Seminar/Workshop on February 26 to 28, 2018. Selected female officers and enlisted personnel of different PAF bases attended the pre-activity in commemoration of the National Women's Month in March.

The Command-approved gathering of female GAD advocates coming from the headquarters and other bases of the PAF focused on ways to enhance and strengthen institutional mechanisms that carry out women participation in gender mainstreaming.

Colonel Sharon G Gernale PAF (GSC), the Wing Commander of the newly-activated Tactical Operations Wing South Luzon served as the presiding officer and keynote speaker of the event.

Attorney Mylen Gonzales-Esquivel, RSW, GAD Consultant and Accredited Gender Resource Pool from the Philippine Commission on Women, served as the resource person.

During the activity, all participants were asked to write their vision of women involvement. They were also requested to determine some sustainable ways to recognize the women's role in the PAF.

They were then grouped in order to come up with an output.

The outputs that were collected from the workshop centered on women's areas of concern in relation to the provisions of the Magna Carta of Women on GEWE; these include the following: assignment, benefits and privileges (health/leave), recruitment, training and education, facilities and institutional mechanisms.

The seminar/workshop also highlighted the comprehensive discussions on PAF initiatives towards the fulfillment of MCW GEWE provisions, reasons for non-compliance, needed action, timelines, and responsible unit/office.

After the brainstorming, the panel composed of Colonel Gernale, Colonel Ma Vene Tacuboy, Lieutenant Colonel Rosemawattee Remo, and Major Apple Gay Medroso reviewed the participants' outputs. The all-female panel then conducted an open forum in order to answer the issues and concerns raised by the participants.

Immediately after, certificates of completion were distributed to the participants.
