The Air Force Safety Office (AFSO), in cooperation with the Department of Labor and Employment-Occupational Safety and Health Center, conducted the Appreciation Course on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) on 18 October 2016 at the Officers’ Club in Colonel Jesus Villamor Air Base, Pasay City with around 65 participants composed of Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Civilian Supervisors of the Philippine Air Force (PAF).
The seminar-workshop was one of the components and elements of the PAF Safety Management System particularly on Safety Education and Training. It aimed to identify workplace and health hazards, as well as, apply risk management measure for these hazards.
Training Specialist Joyce Ann O Dela Cruz gave an overview on Occupational and Health Situationer. She provided points to level off the expectations of the participants and emphasized that the OSH seeks to recognize and control hazards in the workplace, which may cause death, injury, sickness or great discomfort and inefficiency among the workers. Her presentation was followed by Engineer Bryan Paul B Paraiso who discussed on the Recognition and Control of Potential Hazards in the workplace. Apart from sharing his knowledge, he also provided programs and methods in proper housekeeping, mechanical and material handling, fire safety, electrical safety, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Meanwhile, Engineer Mark A Felix lectured on Industrial Hygiene. He provided techniques in identifying, recognizing, and evaluating different environmental hazards in the workplace. He recommended approaches on how to apply appropriation control measures to minimize and eliminate hazards. Moreover, Occupational Health Officer, Dr. Jehremias M Florante, discussed on Promoting Safety and Health in Government Offices focusing on health effects of different hazards, and lifestyle-related diseases and workplace issues. The primary goal of Dr Florante’s lecture was to inculcate to the participants the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental, and social well-being of workers of all occupation.
Lastly, Ms Joyce Ann O Dela Cruz facilitated the “Just Thinking about my Workplace” workshop. At the end of the workshop, the participants were able to identify hazards, and recommended various strategies to improve the quality of their respective workplaces.
During the culmination of the workshop, Lieutenant Colonel Loreto B Pasamonte PAF (MNSA), Director of AFSO, expressed his gratitude to the resource speakers, participants, and organizers for the successful conduct of the seminar. Lt Col Pasamonte emphasized that safety and health is priceless, thus, it should be everybody’s concern. He challenged everyone to become energetic and innovative safety advocates. He also urged the participants to share what they learned from the seminar to their co-workers in their respective units.
