Confident in the capabilities and competencies of the renowned Hueys, the Marine troops requested for resupply and troop insertion and extraction in the area of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat, on 24 March 2019.
Considering that the landing zone (LZ) at the said area has an elevation of 4,500 feet and that clouds quickly build up during the day, the Cotabato Hornet Flight, stationed at TOG12, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, started the mission early in the morning and immediately landed at the Kumalawit Airstrip, Lebak, Sultan Kudarat, where one of the Company Commanders of the Marine Battalion Landing Team (MBLT) 2 briefed the Huey Element Leader about the mission.
According to the Company Commander, the 10 nautical-mile radius was filled with members of the New People’s Army. Moreover, the armed troops of MILF and MNLF were exchanging fire near the LZ. Thus, the safest way to resupply, insert, and extract the Marines was through air transport, utilizing the Hueys. After gathering all available pertinent information, the flight element proceeded to the area, carrying supplies and personnel. Due to the high elevation and massive vegetation, the troops had difficulty finding the LZ.
With stern decision-making, the Element Leader committed to the landing approach and proceeded without hesitation. Crew resource management (CRM) worked excellently during the flight. The co-pilot and crew provided the pilot with information during the approach, which resulted to the safe landing at the LZ. In two shuttles, the Hornet Flight transported a total of 1,990 lbs of supplies, inserted 7personnel, and extracted 7 personnel to and from the area, respectively.
Through their dedication and determination, the pilots and crew of the Hueys truly served as “Bearers of Hope” for the country and the people.
