PAF Supports National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month

21 February 2017

The Philippine Air Force through the 505th Search and Rescue Group participated in the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Incorporated (DSAPI) at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City on February 19, 2017 led by Ms Agnes Lorenzana-Lapeņa, Chairman, Happy Walk 2017, DSAPI.

A total of more than 4,000 participants coming from various places in the Philippines and abroad including Ambassador Sung Y. Kim, US Ambassador to the Philippines and Mr. Hans T. Sy, President of the SM Prime Holdings attended the said event. In addition to the main objective of supporting the cause of DSAPI, this event had also provided an opportunity for 505th SRG to raise the awareness of the participants and guests in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) operations, which had also inspired them to prepare for disasters in their own little way through lively interaction with the rescue pilots and parajumpers.

Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder caused by an error in cell division that results in an extra 21st chromosome. The condition leads to impairments in both cognitive ability and physical growth that range from mild to moderate developmental disabilities. Through a series of screenings and tests, Down syndrome can be detected before or after a baby is born.

The Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI) is a non-stock, non-profit organization, founded in 1991 by a group of dedicated and committed parents and concerned physicians. It aims to offer support to families who have a child with Down syndrome and to initiate, develop, promote, encourage and support programs and projects concerning Down syndrome. DSAPI believes that the initial reactions of new parents that typically bear disappointment, sorrow, fear, guilt, confusion and anger can be replaced with positive attitudes of warmth, love, understanding and hope.
