5 Of The Top 10 Graduating Cadets Of PMA Class 2017 Are Joining The PAF

Four female cadets and one male cadet of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Sanggalang ay Lakas at Buhay Para sa Kalayaan Ng Inang Bayan (SALAKNIB) Class of 2017 who are joining the Philippine Air Force successfully made it to the top ten.

The five aerocadets are: Cadet First Class Carlo Emmanuel Manalansan Canlas ranked fifth, Cadet First Class Shiela Joy Ramiro Jallorina ranked sixth, Cadet First Class Joyzy Mencias Funchica ranked eighth, and Cadet First Class Resie Jezreel Arrocena Hucalla ranked ninth, and Cadet First Class Catherine Mae Gonzales ranked ten.

Cadet Canlas was born on April 14, 1994 in Lubao, Pampanga. He graduated as class valedictorian when he was in elementary at St. Joseph High School, and finished his secondary education as 7th honorable mention at Regional Science High School III. And in college, he took up Bachelor of Science in Geodetic Engineering at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. In the cadet corps, Cadet Canlas held various positions such as the company representative of the Cadet Conduct Policy Board (CCPB), brigade plans and program officer, battalion executive officer, and cadet-in-charge of Math Club. He is also involved in the Boxing Corps Squad, Marathon Corps Squad, and Body Building Club.

Cadet Jallorina was born on the 31st of October 1995 in Nueva Vizcaya. She is a proud daughter of a farmer and a housewife. She has 5 siblings and one them is an Army Officer who belongs to PMA Sanlingan Class of 2005. Because of her love for education, Cadet Jallorina looked for ways to continue especially her tertiary education. Their financial problem compelled her to take the PMA exam to take advantage of a free education. In the cadet corps, she is the Brigade Finance Officer. She is a deanís list and commandantís list awardee, and a Course Excellence Awardee.

A native of Butuan City, Agusan Del Norte, Cadet Funchica was born on January 11, 1994. Before entering the academy, she spent most of her early years in Butuan City. In 2006, she graduated high school as the class valedictorian. She then pursued her tertiary education at Caraga State University. She took up Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics and became a deanís list awardee. It was in 2013 when she was chosen as one of the cadets to join the PMA Salaknib Class of 2017. In the cadet corps, she is the companyís first platoon leader and company academic officer. She is a consistent deanís lister and a recipient of the Course Excellence Award. Not only is she intelligent, sheís also physically active as she is a member of the Athletic Corps Squad. And sometime in 2016, she was sent to Indonesia as one of the contingents for the Philippines-Indonesia Cadet Exchange Visit.

Cadet Hucalla was born on June 19, 1993 in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley. In 2005, she graduated as class valedictorian at Mipangi Elementary School and finished high school at Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School. As a young lady, she dreamed of becoming a teacher, which inspired her to pursue a degree in Secondary Education at the University of Mindanao Tagum. When she entered the PMA in 2013, Cadet Hucallaís name was included in the Commandantís List. She also showed high aptitude in her class which placed her on the deanís list from 2014 until the present semester. Other than that, she is the acting chair of the CCPB, company finance officer, and second platoon leader of the Hawk Company. She is also a member of the Arnis Corps Squad, PMA Camera Club, and Silent Drill Company.

Lastly, Cadet Gonzales was born on September 9, 1994 and a native of Zambowood, Zamboanga City. In the cadet corps, sheís the Commander of the Bravo Company. She is a deanís lister. Moreover, she is a member of the PMA Christian Fellowship, and Arnis Corps Squad. At first, joining the profession of arms was out of her plan. But as the years passed, she realized that she was born to lead and protect the country by becoming a pilot.

Meanwhile, a female cadet topped this yearís graduating cadets. Cadet First Class Rovi Mairel Martinez of Cabanatuan City ranked first among the 167 cadets. She is the fourth female to top a graduating class since 1997. Other top graduating cadets are: Cadet First Class Philip Modestano Viscaya of Ligao City in Albay province (2nd), Cadet First Class Eda Glis Buansi Marapao of Baguio City (3rd), Cadet First Class Cathleen Jovi Santiano Baybayan of San Fernando City in Pampanga (4th), and Cadet First Class Sheila Marie Calonge De Guzman of Manaoag in Pangasinan (7th).

This batch of graduating cadets has 63 females, the highest figure to graduate since the PMA started admitting women in 1993 under Republic Act No. 7192 (Women in Development and Nation Building Act), which gave women equal access to all service academies in the country.
