CLOUDSEEDING FOR REGION 2
The Department of Agriculture in Region II, through a letter addressed to Air Force Commanding General Lt Gen Oscar H Rabena AFP, has requested the Air Force’s help for cloud seeding in areas in Region II threatened by the El Niño phenomenon.
Mr. Andrew B Villacorta, Regional Executive Director of DA Regional Field Unit No. 2, has forwarded a letter requesting the PAF’s help to provide aircraft to be used for cloud seeding operations covering an area of 200,000 hectares of corn and rice crops. The rainmaking missions will try to alleviate the worsening drought in the region that may cause huge losses in rice and corn production.
When preparations for the rainmaking mission are completed, the cloud seeding sorties will be conducted from January to March 2010 – the start of the prolonged drought. The PAF’s 900th Air Force Weather Group will be in the forefront of the operations employing a LC-210 aircraft piloted by Maj Eric Collado and Maj Giemel Espino.
The PAF’ timely participation in rainmaking missions has averted losses in crop plantations in previous years. The conduct of these kinds of missions provides relief and alleviates the devastating effects of prolonged drought in farming areas.#
